Website Content Audits

Listen of the Week: Website Content Audits

I’m not sure where everyone’s mind goes when they hear ‘audit’. I imagine since it’s near tax time, we get a little squeamish. In this case, we can relax. Irwin R. Schyster will not be breaking down our door to talk about your federal income taxes. Instead, let’s talk about your website content.

Yes, there are tools that you can plug in your website address and it spits back results. These are super helpful but don’t really do anything. What really matters is what we do with the results. Running a report or an audit is wasted time if we don’t know how to fix the problem.

Thankfully – there are resources out there that explain what to do and what to look for when you audit your content.

The Premise of The New Marketing Show Podcast

It was just last week where I discussed the importance of a short podcast. I was searching for website content audit podcasts and can across The New Marketing Show. I was excited when I saw the duration was just around 10-minutes. Since this was a new find, I was skeptical of the value. I took to the Internet and toured their website.

The New Marketing Show, by Trinity Web Media, is the only marketing podcast that focuses on solving business problems through effective marketing. Subscribe and enjoy the journey with your hosts Greg Taylor and Kevin Eberle from Trinity Web Media.

Why Did I Pick a Podcast about Website Content Audits?

The content on your website is the most important part of your website. Yes, we can focus on speed. We can focus on the user experience. The design and functionality does matter. But if you don’t focus on content, you won’t get the user.

If you want to show up on search for a specific keyword, you need to use that keyword in your content. It’s funny how often people want to show up for so many terms but only have one page on the website – with no mention of any of those words. Google is smart enough to understand synonyms and related terms, but why make them work. Spell it out and use your keywords in the content.

Now, a content audit and a website audit can be interpreted as different things. In the case of this podcast, it is a bit of a hybrid. They discuss some technical aspects, but also things you need to look for when auditing your site for SEO. A few topics covered are:

  • H1 Tags
  • Alt attributes and text
  • Image optimization and naming
  • 404 pages and 301 redirects
  • Page Speed Tools
  • Meta Titles and Descriptions

The podcast is detailed enough to give you a good understanding, but you will still want to do some searching for the best approaches for your individual website platform. Seems like WordPress was his choice for CMS.
